Formulas sold under the brands Similac, Alimentum, or EleCare were recently recalled and have been linked to serious and sometimes deadly infections in infants, including cronobacter-related illnesses.
What are Cronobacter Illnesses?
Recalled powdered infant formulas may be contaminated with Cronobacter, a bacterium that causes severe, life-threatening conditions including sepsis (the body’s extreme response to an infection), salmonella (foodborne illness), and meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine).
Symptoms of cronobacter illnesses include:
- Abdominal cramps or pain
- Abnormal body movements
- Diarrhea, sometimes with blood
- Fever
- Grunting breaths
- Headache
- Irritability
- Jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes)
- Nausea
- Poor feeding
- Temperature changes
- Vomiting
Parents should seek immediate medical treatment for their child if they detect any of these symptoms.
You May Qualify for a Legal Claim If:
Your child ingested Similac, Similac PM 60/40, Alimentum, or EleCare powdered infant formula purchased from Jan. 1, 2019, onward and came down with a cronobacter-related infection, with or without a diagnosis or hospitalization.
